The ill effects of smoking are numerous and deadly. It is well-known that lung cancer is one of the greatest problems caused due to tobacco smoke. Second-hand smoke too causes various problems which include breathing problems, such as, asthma and a more dangerous illness, cancer. It is not fair to have so many people who don’t smoke suffer just because a few wish to smoke cigarettes. This should not be allowed. Although smoking has been banned in several public areas and the public is warned about the ill effects of smoking it does not seem to make much difference to those who smoke. Does this solve the problem? No. This is why smoking needs to be banned completely and not just in closed places. This is why the public should fight for completely banning smoking.
Every person has the right to inhale fresh and clean air. However, this is not so. There is pollution everywhere mostly caused by vehicles and factories. Should cigarette smoke be added to this problem? Should the public be subjected to the inhalation of cigarette smoke too? Let’s take the person who opens his window to get some fresh and cool air on a hot, day only to find his neighbour smoking a cigarette near the said window. This person is unable to stop his neighbour from smoking because he is doing it in his space and not in a public area. Yet, the smoke from his cigarette enters the person’s home and he finds himself breathing in these toxic fumes. It is either inhale toxic fumes or close his window and suffer in the heat! This would not happen if smoking were banned completely.
There are valid reasons why smoking should be banned. For starters, people have died in their sleep as they have been smoking in bed and fallen asleep. To make it worse, they have also caused the deaths of innocent family members and neighbours. Smoking in bed is a person’s choice, but, it does not mean he/she has the right to do so irresponsibly and destroy the lives of others in the process. Millions of people die of cigarette smoke. They get different diseases that occur with cigarette smoking, including lung cancer, throat cancer and various other cancers. Plus, smoking increases wrinkle formation, causes gum disease and allergies and asthma. These can be unpleasant to the person and for those around him/her.
Smoking should be banned simply because there are no positive effects from this disgusting habit. If there are no benefits from something, why should one consider doing it? Any poisonous or unhealthy product will be taken off the market immediately and the public will be warned about its dangers. Why not cigarettes? Smoking is not a requirement, it is an addiction. It is as bad as illegal substances, such as, heroin or cocaine, yet, unlike these drugs is openly sold in the market.
Smoking and its effects cost money. The price of cigarettes is, when taken on an annual basis, costs the public a significant sum of money. The cost of hospital and doctor’s bills, as a result of smoking related illnesses, is also quite extensive. Does the public really wish to subject themselves to such problems with such a bad habit?
There is no reason why smoking should NOT be banned. Yet, there is every reason to ensure that it IS banned. Stopping the manufacturing and selling of cigarettes is the first order of business. If enough of the public gathered to say “no” to cigarettes, we can ensure one problem of sickness is alleviated.
